				BACKGROUND TRIVIA !!! What are these strangely decorated, ball-like images, popping up from the background of this page? Well... as unlikely as it may seem, you are looking at a genuine detail of an early 17th century drawing, illustrating different ways to carve oranges, for the sole purpose of decorating a banquet table! The original woodcut -- labeled "Melarance" -- is included in the 1605 edition of Scappi's Opera, a fascinating book that documents the degree of effort Renaissance society put into the refinement of the culinary arts. The chefs themselves were considered artists, as they developed and refined Italian cuisine to new heights of variety, subtlety, and luxuriousness. The table was elaborately decorated through the aesthetic shaping of fruit and napkins into flower and animal disguises. Fish and meats were presented to please the eye as well as the palate. Serving was done with a perfected ceremoniousness and with rich and beautiful service and vessels. The decoration of orange skins involved elaboratly cut designs like those shown on this page. Orange skins were also halved and prepared as containers to present other foods. More trivia?
